What diseases do squirrels carry?
Squirrels are known to be live in wild that is why it is not advisable to pet at home even they are small and cute animals to take care of. They have diseases and other parasites that can be harmful to you and to your domestic pets as well. They can carry the following diseases like;
• Parasites
• Leptospirosis
• Salmonellosis
• Tularemia
• Lyme disease

Parasites that are harmful
Squirrels live in the wild that is why they are prone to parasites that can be harmful to us human and even to your other pets at home. These parasites are fleas, mites an ticks. These parasites can also bring diseases.

Leptospirosis and Salmonellosis
These diseases carried by squirrel can be get from their saliva, urine and feces. Leptospirosis can be transmitted if you have an open wound then squirrel's urine contaminated your wound. It can bring headache, fever and if not treated well can be fatal as well. Salmonellosis can be transmitted by the squirrels' feces these bacteria can cause you vomiting, stomach ache and diarrhea. This can be treated with antibiotics.

Tularemia
This disease can be get when you handle sick or dead squirrels. That is why it is needed to have a protective gear when handling them. It can give you skin ulcers, fever, headaches and swollen lymph glands. It can be treated using antibiotics.

Lyme Disease
Even though you are not bitten with squirrel, its tick can give you disease like this one because it can bring bacteria that can be transmitted to you. Symptoms can be fatigue and headache. If not treated it can cause you facial paralysis and heart palpitations, it can be treated with antibiotics. Always visit nearest clinic or hospital if you notice some of the symptoms after you handle squirrels.
